Originally from Tennessee, Shirley began her artistic development as an interior designer in Atlanta. As a space planner and designer, she often used the analogy of a room being much like the artist’s canvas. The composition of a painting and an interior space must have a balance of texture, contrast, shape and color.
Since discovering her passion for painting seven years ago, she has given it her full attention. Her travels to Europe, Mexico and South Africa have been the inspiration for much of her art. She loves the challenges of painting figures, still life and landscape. Her recent paintings using the pallet knife are examples of her love for moving and mixing paint on the canvas.
Though her career as an artist is short in comparison to some, she has lost no time to find and study under some of the best artist from coast to coast including Roseta Sandigo, Alice William, Scott Burdick, Susan Sarback, Albert Handell, Dee Beard Dean, Kris Meadows and Marc Chatov. While studying with Susan Sarback, who trained under Henry Henche, Shirley realized how light affects color and began to paint with the radiant palette she now uses.
She is a member of The Quinlan Visual Arts Center, Roswell Visual Arts Center, Cobb County Arts Center, Atlanta Artist Center and Brushstrokes Art Group. Her accomplishments include having her paintings accepted in juried shows as well as exhibited in many art shows in the Atlanta area.

I have been an art lover throughout my life, and started expressing myself through painting in the late 1970s while living in Roanoke, Virginia. Originally working in acrylics, collage, watercolors and mixed media, I attended many workshops and classes in and around Virginia and North Carolina to improve my techniques. In 2000 I moved to Atlanta, Georgia, and expanded my repertoire to include oils and pastels, where I continue to benefit from the expertise of other accomplished artists. Over the years, I have been fortunate enough to learn from artists in a variety of media, including workshops and classes conducted by Charles Reid, Arne Westerman, and Polly Hammett (watercolors), Margaret Dyer, Susan Sarbuck, and Salley Strand (pastels and oils), Nancy Honea, Ben Smith, and Jonathan Simon (portraiture, drawing), and Deborah Nadelhoffer (oils & pastels). My work has been accepted into several juried shows in the mid-Atlantic region and in 2009, an emerging artist show at the Anne Irwin fine art gallery in Atlanta. My art also hangs in several private homes.
